Hanging Out on the Solution Side @ Dscoop6

On February 21, 2011 by Jennifer Matt

Do you dwell on the problems or the solutions? The right attitude can make all the difference during times of transition.

Brian Tracy was one of the keynote speakers at Dscoop6 last week. My favorite quote from his speech; “UNsuccessful people think about what’s wrong and who is to blame, SUCCESSFUL people think about what they want and how to make it happen.” What do you think about?

The other keynote at Dscoop6 was Stan Slap author of “I Buried My Heart at Conference Room B.” I bought his book at the show and finished reading it before I touched down in San Francisco (awesome book, awesome speech). I swear I’ve seen that guy at my dog park – you can bet I’ll be hanging out at my dog park more if there’s a chance I can exchange some ideas between ball tosses ;-)

The Dscoop organization has created a culture that thinks about what they want and how to get to it (rather than what’s wrong and who is to blame). They hang out on the “solution side.” This is their culture and as Stan Slap would say, the Dscoop organization has “emotional commitment” to the organization. Only emotional commitment could create this kind of energy. You can’t buy it (so don’t sit there and say its because HP wrote a big check – big checks have been written before and the events only managed to bore me).

I’ll use Stan Slap’s words to describe how it’s created, ironic that I learned about his work in an environment that exhibited it perfectly.

“The only way to generate dependable emotional commitment is to allow it to be self-generated.”

“Enforcing it or reinforcing it isn’t as important as getting out of the way and letting it happen.”

Hats off to Dscoop, it will be a highlight of my year. I thought I had to go to technology events in San Francisco to experience this kind of energy. The leaders of Dscoop are emotionally invested in creating a peer group that is solution oriented and thankfully HP is wise enough not to muck it up!

Jennifer, thank you for succinct observations.

Dscoop’s mission this year: “Think bigger!”

Dscoop’s executive director, Eric Hawkinson, puts it best: ” . . . bigger doesn’t mean growth in conference attendance or elevated membership percentages. To me, “bigger” means the development of new ideas and techniques that are aimed at growing both our member companies and the awareness of digital print worldwide.”

As you acknowledge, Dscoop6 will be the highlight of digital print in 2011. Amazing!

  2. Thanks Jennifer. My feelings exactly. Wonderful to meet you as well.

Should have known you would quote Tracy as the lead of your blog. He’s been in my personal sales development library for years and I was glad to thank him personally for how his ideas have helped my career.

I pulled out a couple of old cassettes from this library this week and his ideas still ring true today. Ethics, determination and hard work go a long way in making success.

I know of no other conference that’s growing as fast as Dscoop. In numbers, in enthusiasm, in relevance. I’ve never seen such a gathering of print-centric entreprenurial talent.
